The Alchemy is such a misunderstood song. People don't give it an honest chance and brush it off as a love song about some boy. However, it's a fantastic hype song. It perfectly captures the feeling of returning to work after PTO while the office was struggling without me.

That said, I am baffled today because I found out people find it "confusing" or "convoluted". It's probably the simplest song on the album.

I set some goals in the beginning of the year--some are going well, some are going less well. Let's check in on them!

Fitness: Run a 5K in less than 30 minutes. Close but no dice. I got my time down to about 32 minutes. This is a huge improvement from my times last year (around 40 minutes) BUT after hitting this, I injured my foot. I haven't ran seriously in months, and it's not looking good for my goal. If I do hit this goal, I'm going to be training a lot after the summer to make up for all the time I lost after injuring my foot.

Reading: Read 15 books this year. I just finished my 13th book! I'm doing great on this goal and will have no problem hitting 15 by the end of the year--a huge improvement from the four or five books I read last year. I think I should raise this goal to 20 books. In review, the following books have been my favorite so far (in order that I've finished them, not necessarily ranked by fave):

- Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman -- a necessary book in today's political climate, I think. It's a refreshing look at human nature, taking on a more positive (and arguably realistic) look at the nature of people. We're not as bad as we make ourselves out to be.

- This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone -- I was told to just read it without knowing anything about it, and that is my advice to you. I will say it's shorter and faster paced than the other books I've enjoyed, but it's so good. I'm going to be re-reading it after I hit my goal of 15 books!

- Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn -- I'm late to the party with this one and regret seeing the movie first. This would be an insane read going in blind.

- Night’s Master by Tanith Lee -- Adored this short read!! The high fantasy vibe of the writing is so underrated and makes the stories feel like old myths. Really excited to read more of this series in the future. The world is rich with wonder and crafted with a love for writing.

-- and my current read, Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi -- I put this one on my list this year because I heard there's a movie in the making and I love to be ahead of the curve on the book-to-movie pipeline and it has exceeded all my expectations. One of the best fantasies I've read in a long time, with great pacing and fantastic world building and lovable characters (even the antagonists). As a small spoiler, the main character has DEATH MAGIC. She's a REAPER by title!! It's so cool and it's so refreshing to have a main character who isn't just a fire or water elemental.

Changing jobs: This one is still a work in process. I'm on a contract until the end of summer, but I've been diligently applying to jobs this past week. It may be too soon to apply since my start date will be so far away, but there's no harm in exploring since I haven't been on the job market in years. I'm trying not to stress too much about it and just get through the motions that will get me what I need.

Saving money: I'm saving sooooooo much more money this year, and I'm so proud of myself. I used to be a coffee-and-or-alcohol on the daily bitch, but in managing my money, I've also better managed those addictions. I think next year I want to quit alcohol completely as the post-drinking is starting to feel terrible and unbearable for 30-year-old me. It does nothing but keep me from my other goals (I injured my foot while drunk, btw) and makes me feel bad the next day. Coffee I'm still drinking a lot of, but some I'm making at home and choosing cheaper options when I'm out with my friends.

Overall I'm pretty happy with my progress. Save for fitness, I'm on track to hit my goals by the end of the year. ^_^

I got my wisdom teeth removed yesterday; they don't give you crazy drugs that make you loopy like they do back home lol, but he process was fine nonetheless. The dentist really struggled to pull my teeth out though! It was stressful and they both broke at the root. So he had to drill extra to get the little pieces out. It was scary!! But not painful thanks to the anesthetic. Then I got home and had the best sleep of my life. If only I could replicate the surgery every day and sleep like a baby...

There is some pain, but the wounds weren't big enough to even warrant stitches. So I think I'm healing A-OK~ I've been going to the dentist because I'm returning home before the end of the year. And I haven't done any proper body check-ups in years... so in that same vein, I have a doctor's appointment next week too just to make sure everything's normal. I'm NOT looking forward to it. Granted I wasn't looking forward to going to the dentist and that turned out all right.

On another note, I finally got my music library to where I want it to be~ So the current project I'm working on is a physical scrap book documenting my 30s.

A woman doing something isn't necessarily feminism. Sometimes it can even be anti-feminist. Sabrina Carpenter choosing to engage in misogyny for the male gaze is still engaging in misogyny. It's still the male gaze. People can claim it's "satire" but, without an obvious wink to the audience, it's not satire--it's just a harmful message (a woman objectifying herself to a man) without the subversion (missing). Sabrina Carpenter's new album cover does not threaten or mock the status quo--it IS the status quo.

Then some defenders are not suggesting it's satire. Instead, they are simply saying it's empowering: supposedly it's "obviously for women" and it's "obviously mocking men who think it's for them" But...it has no obvious tell that it's not for men, actually. It's just for men. This is proven by men posting about how much HOT they find the album cover without any discussion about feminism while the women fight about whether or not it's feminist.

That all being said, I'm not saying Sabrina can't do whatever she wants. I don't think she's a bad role model or a slut or anything. Admittedly I've never liked her much because she caters so much to the male gaze / straight fantasies (but I do find her hot, probably proving my point further--not liking her but liking the LOOK of her). But she can do whatever she likes--she's a pop star, not a political activist. I can see it's fun for her and other women! It's just not empowering. It's not feminism. If it is supposed to be satire, it's a failed experiment. And ultimately, it's so weird and a little disheartening that women need to do mental gymnastics to justify liking something "problematic" to themselves and others.

Edit: After sleeping on it, I'm left to only assume that she isn't even trying to be satirical or feminist like her fans insist. It's an insult to her to suggest she missed the mark that badly. I think ultimately she's just being shocking because being horny is her "thing" and sex sells. It's certainly generated a lot of online discussion (even here on XHS). Her fans are perhaps just a little delulu and trying to cope with the fact their favorite isn't a Feminist Icon--it's not like she ever expressed an interest in being one. And that should be OK.

I'm so glad that I decided to be irresponsible and stay up to drink tonight tonight because Taylor just announced she bought her masters for all her albums. This is crazy news!!!!!! I knew it would happen eventually but ALREADY? I'm happy for her!!!

It's been a couple weeks, but I'm still working on sorting through my music files daily. I'm made a lot of progress, but there are still so many artists and albums and songs to sort. My motivation to continue is dropping, so I'm lightening the load and sorting only an artist or two a day. I've finished all my favorite music first, and maybe some of the unsorted music won't even make the cut in the end. Do I really care if I'm missing Daft Punk from my library (I think no). Nonetheless, it's been really rewarding to do and I love the results so far. Comparing the music side-by-side satisfies the J in ENFJ.

In addition to this music project, I've been trying to improve my cursive handwriting. To do so, I've been writing lyrics to a different song everyday to practice, and it's coming along nicely. I just have to remember that I'm practicing, and I should take it slow and steady for better results. I often end up rushing through the second half of a song, then wonder why I'm not satisfied with the finished product. I'm glad I'm finally doing something like this! For years I've admired other people's nice handwriting and wishing I could write like them. Well it turns out that I can!

I've also started a new book, A Ballad for Slayers and Monsters. It was described to me as "The Witcher but lesbian" and that's accurate so far--a little cliche with the gruff heroine with a tragic backstory slaying monsters and sleeping with barmaids in the first few chapters, but I can tell it's going to be fun. I really want to search about for art of the main characters, but I'll have to wait until I finish the book to avoid spoilers.

In less happy news, a cafe I really liked closed down. I went there this morning with the intention to relax, but discovered lights out and packing boxes all over the place. It was one I went to often, and wanted to write a review for it, but now I'll never get the chance. Goodbye, The Hood Cafe.
matcheslit: Coffee cups on a table (coffee)

Location: Wu Da Dao area in Tianjin, China

Hours: MTWRFSaSu 10:00-19:00

First Impression: Time Free cafe is on the edge of Wu Da Dao and easy to find. It’s on the second floor and has lots of seating. You’ll first notice all the decorations in the cafe—pictures, knick knacks, old cases and classic furniture. It’s very cozy.

Environment ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The environment is a little crowded. There are too many tables and chairs in such a small space. It’s hard to navigate and you feel far too close to the person next to you. It does have a small terrace for outside relaxation, but it seems like only one group of friends can sit out there at a time. It’s dark, but each table has its own lamp for work or study, and the decorations are really pretty.

Food & Drink ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The coffee is fine—it wasn’t brewed hot enough for me. I had a "blue velvet" coconut latte and the flavor was nice. The options are plenty, though, and the prices are about the same as other cafes in the area. There are options for snacks, but I didn’t try any of them.

Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service is fine—nothing bad to say, but nothing particularly great either. There is one barista working, but not a lot of customers coming and going. At other cafes, I'm usually offered water while staying for a long time, but I wasn't.

Netizen Friendly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The tables are great for online work or study, fitting a laptop and/or books. There are plenty of outlets and free wifi. There is a bathroom, too, so it’s not too inconvenient to stay for a long time.

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Time Free cafe is just fine. It’s worth checking out if you’re exploring the city or need a place to study or work for a few hours. But even on the weekday, it felt crowded because of how close tables are together. It’s cozy, but stuffy. There are other cafes in the area that I prefer.

After last night's mishap and losing all my playlists, I did remake them. And they are better. But in the process, I ended up switching music apps completely. And now...I'm inspired to go through each and every file in my music library and clean up the meta data. I'm also going to delete doubles and condense albums that are split across folders (looking at you Bastille, who released twenty-some versions of your debut album). This is going to be a weeks-long project because I have over 2k songs. But once I'm done, I'll be much happier with the content and aesthetic (meta data affecting album art and all that) of my library. I have so much work to do lol. But it'll give me something to do with the weather getting hotter and hotter, making me want to go out less and less. Wish me luck!!
matcheslit: Oikawa Tooru from Haikyuu!! (Default)
My library of music wasn't broken, but I tried to fix it and lost all my playlists in the process. On one hand, I'm a little bummed that I've lost all the playlists (songs to cry to, to sing along with, favorite songs from certain artists, playlists excluding certain artists, playlists for running, for boxing, etc). On the other hand, I'm lowkey excited to just rebuild them again. It's not like I lost the music--I just lost the playlists. And the playlists I had were getting a little stale for me and I found myself skipping every other song on every other playlist anyway. Other than, like, the playlist I had just made (but it's fine, really). It's hard to bring me down and I do love to embrace reasons to do something over because now I can do it better!

I've also been playing with one of the tamagotchi I got in Osaka~ P1 is not as fun as P2 to play (and both new tamas are P1), but I'm enjoying playing again and hopefully finding something new. So far the Destinations Tamagotchi isn't any different from the usual P1, but I expected it to be. I thought I had read somewhere that the food for the tamagotchi is different, but maybe 1) I'm completely misremembering or 2) it only changes for the adult tamagotchi.

I had written hundreds of words on the song "Godlight" by Noah Kahan because I've been listening to it all day and I wanted to share my analysis. But then I misclicked and lost the entire thing--only the first few words were saved as a draft. Just... go listen to Godlight while I cry myself to sleep. You can listen on Youtube here.

To clarify why this post is happening in the middle of the week, my "weekend" is in the middle of the week. Without getting too much into it, I do prefer this sort of schedule because whenever I go out and about, it's not crowded. I don't have to wait for tables at cafes or restaurants, traffic is minimal as long as I avoid rush hours--it's fantastic. Anyway, with that out of the way~

I spent the first day of my weekend cleaning the whole apartment and catching up on laundry. All the while, a Vanilla Coke is sitting in the fridge, waiting for me. The day was beautiful, the sky was blue, my windows were wide open. It took, like, five hours because I was definitely catching up on things that should've been done but weren't because of holiday and a busy personal schedule. Then when I was finally done... I sat down and did digital de-cluttering lol. Backing up music and photos and journal posts and the like. Then when that was finally done, I caught up on Colors TCG tasks and crashed.

This morning, I wrapped up laundry before leaving to hang out with my friend for the day. The weather wasn't as nice as it was yesterday, but it was cool and not raining or anything. So I ended up biking home from her place for about an hour and a half. Jumped in the shower. And NOW... I am finally enjoying that Vanilla Coke (a real treat, an import here that's more expensive than some alcohol)! Life is good even if you got to work for it sometimes. Lighting a candle and relaxing in your own home after a thorough clean is the best thing in the world. I'm so happy and feeling refreshed.

Osaka was great in a lot of ways--disappointing in one (my food tour was cancelled)--but the highlight for me was getting my hands on TWO special Tamagotchi!! Tama Destinations: Kansai and the Original Celebration Egg. Admittedly, I could get the Celebration Egg anywhere I think, but Tama Destinations should be exclusive to their province. It's the best souvenir for someone like me who collects Tamagotchi--which just kinda happened. You get one and then want a different set of characters or colors and then a special one and suddenly you have six...

This is my first time doing the Friday Five! It reminds me of old deviantART memes where you'd tag all your friends to answer some questions in their journals. And I've been craving that old web community and feelings. So here I am.

1. What is your all time favorite book?
I've always had a few favorites. Only recently can I say that my all time favorite is probably This Is How You Lose the Time War. Its fast-pacing and strange and familiar and crazy world almost put me off, but it quickly grew on me.

2. What is your all time favorite movie?
For the longest time, it was PS I Love You, but now the first Spider-verse movie is probably my all time favorite. I've seen it a billion times. Both of these movies make me sob like a baby.

3. What are you reading right now?
Night's Master by Tanith Lee. I'm invested--not only in Tales From the Flat Earth (its series) but in Tanith Lee in general. How is she not as famous and  s Anne Rice or GRR Martin? I've never read a better written fantasy. It's so poetic and fantastical.

4. What is your favorite show on TV?
I can rewatch The Vampire Diaries no matter mood. Of newer TV, I'm not a free-thinker at all lol and I adore Severance.

5. What is the last movie you saw in the theater?
Fast and Furious 7--an anniversary showing. Fast and Furious is a guilty pleasure of mine. I know its cheesy and silly sometimes, but I keep coming back to it.
matcheslit: Coffee cups on a table (coffee)
Location: Kita Ward, Osaka, Japan

Hours: 7:00-22:00 MTWRF and 7:30-22:00 SaSu

First Impression:
Doutor is a chain coffee shop with a fresh and inviting atmosphere, located near the Osaka railway station. It’s down a small alley and not too crowded in the morning. Customers are mostly businessmen who may or not be traveling to or from the city, some working on laptops while they enjoy their coffee.

Environment ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The environment is clean and the space is large. I was surprised to find a smoking room on the second floor. There are plenty of seating options—including a sort of tech bar, which is basically a bar with outlets available for phones and laptops.

Food & Drink ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Doutor has breakfast and lunch options as well as good coffee. I enjoyed a cinnamon coffee for less than 600 yen (but then there are service fees, of course). Compared to other cafes in the area, the coffee is cheaper.

Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The staff are friendly and maintain a clean restaurant. If not serving customers, they are checking the second floor for any left behind trash. They will offer an English menu if they see you’re struggling with Japanese (which I was) and the barista who took my order could speak English very well!

Netizen Friendly ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Free wifi, outlets, and a bathroom is all you need to keep me happy! Doutor has all three including plenty of simple food options in case you get hungry. I’m not a smoker, but there’s even a smoking room.

Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The location is ideal for anyone traveling to/from Osaka Station in Umeda. However, what brought me here was a needed break from shopping, and it’s perfect for that, too. Compared to the other cafe options in the area, it’ll be less crowded and more netizen friendly. I know this because I had made three stops before finally settling here to write—other places did not have the menu I’d like, were too crowded, weren’t open even yet (~8:30 AM), and/or didn’t have the best set up for a laptop. If you’re in the area looking to sit on your computer for a bit, check out Doutor.
